Gekko as an alternative to AREMOS, EViews, etc.

The AREMOS software package is no longer developed, but quite a few institutions etc. around the world use it, primarily for data revision programs (data management), but also for modellling or econometrics.

Gekko has from the start on been inspired by two software packages, namelig AREMOS and PCIM, and Gekko tries to hit the right spot between these packages, that is, at the same time providing rich databank and timeseries facilities, but on the other hand providing easy 'multiplier' analysis and fast model simulation.

So Gekko builds upon these two packages, but tries to synthesize their advantages, and avoid/improve upon some of their disadvantages. As an example, Gekko distinguishes syntactically between scalars (%x) and lists/matrices (#x), to improve readability of the programs. But the overall structure of a Gekko program is similar to the structure of an AREMOS program, so translation is relatively straightforward.
